  • Multichannel Set of the Month ***** ‘Wow! What a treasure trove this one is… The original SACDs were exemplary in their stunning audio presentations, as good as I have ever heard on LSO Live and the best-sounding Nielsen symphonies ever… these certainly surpass all the others in my collection… Outstanding!’ Audiophile Audition

CD of the Week ‘Force and rhythmic energy are among the trademarks of Nielsen's symphonies. This is clearly evident in the concert recordings under the direction of Colin Davis… A great discovery, thanks to Colin Davis and the excellent London Symphony Orchestra.’ NDR Kultur

‘This set of live recordings is the legacy… [Sir Colin Davis] and the orchestra give passionate accounts of all six.’ Sunday Times Culture

‘This cycle undeniably represents some of [Sir Colin Davis’s] most important later work… one of the better and more imaginative sets of the Nielsen symphonies. Highly recommended!’ Classical.net

‘The accounts of all six symphonies are full of freshness and, above all, energy… These are thoroughly considered and convincing interpretations. Throughout the performances the virtuoso playing of the LSO is a decided asset… This set is a desirable package and its appearance in this format is a very good way of marking the Nielsen 150th anniversary.’ MusicWeb International

'It stands to reason that Sir Colin Davis – acknowledged as his time’s great Berlioz conductor – would be a first-rate conductor of Carl Nielsen and he is… In a surprisingly hefty number of complete recordings of the Nielsen symphonies, this holds its own more than nicely.'
    The Buffalo News

‘Colin Davis recorded a Nielsen Symphony Cycle for LSO Live and the three SACDs are very distinguished in performance with many insights from one of the greatest conductors of our time.’ MusicWeb International

‘These recordings, all made at live performances, date to 2009 (No. 5), 2010 (No. 4), and 2011 (Nos. 1-3 and 6). They represent the last word from Davis (1927-2013) on these symphonies, and a very well-considered last word it is.’ Infodad.com

‘Sir Colin Davis’s set with the London Symphony Orchestra is very fine as you might expect… There are plenty of excellent sounds to be experienced here.’ MusicWeb International

‘The London Symphony Orchestra recorded all six with the late Colin Davis…they form a fine introduction to Nielsen's uniquely Scandinavian aesthetic.’ WQXR

‘Energetic and dramatic, the British conductor displays his ease in the (relative) tradition of the first three symphonies, in which he repeatedly emphasises an almost Elgarian dimension.’ ConcertoNet.com

Sir Colin Davis
London Symphony Orchestra

These recordings, made during Sir Colin Davis’ ‘Indian summer’ with the orchestra, are acknowledged to be amongst the finest recordings ever made of this repertoire, receiving numerous awards. The symphonies were originally released between 2011 and 2013 and are now available together for the first time.

Despite giving titles to the majority of his symphonies, Danish composer Carl Nielsen was often vague about what influenced each work. Nevertheless he was a master symphonist and his music is mesmerising, combining propulsive energy with lyrical invention.
