  • ‘By far the best Bruckner I’ve heard Simon Rattle do, and I hope there’s more to come.’
BBC Radio 3 - Record Review

‘There’s no shortage of great performances of this stirring work, but finding one that has a great and passionate performance along with a fine modern recording is a little harder. I’ve always been partial to the Solti on Decca, and the Klemperer on EMI. Both are fiery performances. Still, this new recording with Rattle and the London Symphony is a serious contender.’
    Audiophile Audition

‘What a wonderful symphony this is…Rattle has as a defter touch than Davis, both here and in a tender and finely nuanced account of the great slow movement.’
    Gramophone

‘There is tension and urgency here in the mysteriously pulsing morse-code style opening – imitations of important things to come – and Rattle never lets the slow movement stagnate. The LSO strings are lustrous, with warmth and depth, but they are never indulged.’
    Birmingham Post

‘That Simon Rattle is among the finest of contemporary conductors is surely beyond doubt, and, as any great conductor does, he brings unique insights to any score – nothing is routine, and one is aware that every phrase is keenly considered.’
    Musicweb International

‘Sonically, there is hardly anything to complain about Rattle’s interpretation. He curbs the brass, makes the strings warm and unpretentious music. The conductor finds a fine sound balance and beautiful colour nuances, with fast tempos. This too does not damage Bruckner’s architecture in any way.’

Sir Simon Rattle
London Symphony Orchestra

Bruckner’s Sixth Symphony is one of the most original of all the composer’s
symphonic works. Its contrasting moods, and overarching theme moving from darkness to light, can be haunting one moment and ecstatic the next, culminating in one of the most enigmatic symphonic conclusions of the 19th century. For this recording Sir Simon Rattle conducts the Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs Urtext edition of the score.
