'Having attended the first of the two Barbican concerts from which the recording emanates, I wondered whether Sir Colin's extraordinarily powerful account of the slow movement in particular would move me as much as it did in the concert hall. The answer is an emphatic yes. Not only do Davis and his excellent band distil a remarkable level of concentration in this nobly defiant, dark hued essay, they also locate a heartache and intimacy that touch to the very marrow.'
    Gramophone Symphony No 3

'There's an inner intensity that makes passage after passage come to life as never before ... Most of all, there's a sense that Davis believes utterly in the music.' BBC Music Magazine Symphony No 3

Sir Colin Davis, London Symphony Orchestra

One of the finest orchestral composers of the 20th century, Elgar's three symphonies are emotionally intense and brooding. The optimistic First, composed in 1908, was immediately hailed a masterpiece. He soon started work on the enigmatic Second Symphony, producing a darker work. He never completed his Third, which was eventually realised by Anthony Payne.
