Jointly commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra - with support from Susie Thomson - , Stiftung Berliner Philharmoniker and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Remembering has been described as one of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s best orchestral works. LSO Live present the world premiere recording of the piece, having also premiered Speranza in 2013.

The work was written for Evan Scofield, the son of Turnage’s friend and colleague, jazz guitarist John Scofield. Evan died of cancer, aged 26, in 2013 and in Remembering, Turnage captures his positive and adventurous spirit, the fourth movement in particular serving as an elegy for Evan. An energetic, pulsating figure, seesawing from double basses to high brass, ignites the piece. Taut rhythmic patterns and swift melodic motifs in each section suddenly break off and shift to fateful, drum-heavy, climactic sounds. It is an powerful and emotional piece that explores both life and death.
