LSO Live presents the final release in Principal Guest Conductor Gianandrea Noseda’s Prokofiev symphony cycle with the London Symphony Orchestra. Noseda brings his characteristic dynamism and attention to detail to this captivating performance of Prokofiev’s intricate and rarely heard Symphony No 2.

Composed in Paris in 1924–25, Prokofiev’s second symphony reflects the avant-garde modernism of the time. With inspiration taken from the theme-and-variation structure of Beethoven’s final piano sonata and from the ‘machine music’ of French composer Arthur Honegger, this work stands uniquely among Prokofiev’s symphonic output. Despite its bold modernist style, the piece also has moments that illuminate the composer’s more lyrical side, resulting in an unforgettable symphony full of colour and power.
