Reviews on previous performances in the cycle

'Noseda's cycle of Shostakovich symphonies is shaping up well. After the expansive Fourth, Fifth and Eighth Symphonies, he tackles the contrasting Ninth and Tenth, the earlier work impish—even flippant—in tone despite darker broodings in the slow movement, and the later work a towering masterpiece with its alleged ‘portrait’ of Stalin in the Scherzo, played with terrifying incisiveness by the LSO.’

Hugh Canning, The Sunday Times, on Shostakovich Symphonies Nos 9 & 10

‘The orchestra was sharp and committed, with Noseda conveying the full illusion of triumphant optimism while carving through its dark edge, demonstrating starkly the ‘forced rejoicing’ of this piece and with the incessant industrial iron pounding at the close portrayed sufficiently as the giant exclamation mark that it is.’

Mark Thomas, Bachtrack, on Shostakovich Symphony No 5

“Certain moments in history gave composers the possibility of saying something deeply personal”, says LSO Principal Guest Conductor Gianandrea Noseda. “And Shostakovich speaks equally to us today”.

As Noseda and the LSO continue their journey through Shostakovich’s symphonies, which span the composer’s lifetime, they take on one of his biggest creations—the Seventh. Written during the siege of Leningrad in World War II, it is shattering in scale and impact. For Noseda, “you can hear the march of the soldiers, the obsessive repetition, a loop you cannot escape,” in the relentless, pounding rhythms, the struggle towards a fragile victory.
